Three Calgarians to Race in North American Cross Country Championships
A few weeks ago, Athletics Canada, the national governing body of Track & Field, Road and Cross Country Running, announced the team that will compete at the 2008 NACAC (North America, Central American and Caribbean) Cross Country Championships in Orlando, Florida on March 1 st, 2008. The team will include three Calgary athletes: Veteran runner Lisa Harvey, along with Junior athletes Peter Corrigan and Nyial Majock.
These Calgary athletes qualified to represent Canada at the NACAC Cross Country Championship based on their placing at the Canadian Cross Country Championship held in Guelph, Ontario on December 1 st, 2007. Lisa Harvey placed a solid 11 th overall in a very competitive senior women’s 7 km field. Peter Corrigan and Nyial Majock finished 6 th and 8 th respectively in the junior men’s 8 km race.
The NACAC Championships serves as both an individual, as well as a team event. All countries can enter a team of 6 athletes in each of the 4 categories (Junior and Senior Men and Women), with the top 4 scoring for their team. At last year’s Championships, Canada had outstanding team performances, placing first in the senior women, junior men and junior women, while the senior men’s team finished third. This Championship also serves as a tune-up race for the team which will compete at the World Cross Country Championships, taking place in Edinburgh, Scotland on March 30 th, 2008.
