There are two guarantees in Calgary in March – The weather can change on a dime and The Original St. Patrick’s Day Race will run regardless of what Mother Nature decides.
This was certainly the case this past Sunday, where beautiful weekday weather turn ugly late Saturday evening and into race morning. Despite snow and slippery streets, there were smiles all around as over 760 participants ran 5 or 10km distances around the University of Calgary campus in the 21 st edition, which raises funds for the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Although race times were slowed significantly at the top end, Calgary’s Lindsay McLaren (who happens to be Co-President of the Calgary Roadrunners) crossed the line first in the women’s 10km event in a very respectable time of 38:37. McLaren was followed by Kari Elliot (40:15) and Janice Patterson (41:44) in second and third, respectively. On the men’s side, Edmonton’s Matt Norminton defended his 2007 title, winning the 10km in 32:57. Calgary’s Nathan Kendrick (33:32) was second and El Mostafa Asnam, a newcomer to Calgary from Morocco was third in 33:42.
The women’s 5km saw sisters Ciara Kary and Grace Kary finish 1-2 (20:38 & 21:14) with Orlagh O’Kelly (great Irish name!) taking third in 22:18. Stephen Machowski (20:33) led the men across the 5km finish line, with Matt Hall (21:03) and Nicolas Wang (21:52) finished second and third, respectively. The top three in each event won great prizes from PUMA, including a pair of running shoes each, as well as fabulous PUMA clothing.
