Travis moved to Calgary in 2007 to pursue a degree in teaching. Prior to his tenure at U of Calgary, Travis graduated from Queen's University with degrees in Physical and Health Education and Evolutionary Biology, both with honours. Travis graduated from the University of Calgary in 2009 with a Bachelor of Education, he was hired by the Calgary Separate School District and is currently teaching Biology and General Sciences at St Timothy's JH/SH in Cochrane. Travis has been a competitive runner since the age of 15. He ran 3 years with the Queen's Golden Gaels, 2 years with the U of C Dino's and now currently balances a competitive racing schedule with his teaching and coaching responsibilities when they permit. Travis' XC and track teams are quite successful at St Timothy's, with highlights being his boys high school teams winning City Championships in 2013 and 2014. His XC team also won overall silver at the ASAA provincial championships in the 2A school size division in Fall 2014.
Running has taught Travis the values of a healthy lifestyle, including appropriate mental health. On top of all things, running has taught Travis perseverance and resiliency skills. Running provides purpose, direction, and grounding for him. One of the big opportunities running has given him is the ability to give back to his local community. On top of his coaching responsibilities, Travis is Co-Chair of the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association's Cross Country league. Responsibilities with this title include organizing races, including zone and city championships, liasoning with coaches, media and local business. The title of Chair also requires compiling and deciphering results, giving out awards to worthy competitors, and ensuring Calgary Zone is represented at the Provincial Championships.
Besides the obvious interest in running, Travis enjoys reading, particularly any subject matter of a scientific nature. He also enjoys basketball, having experience coaching this sport as well. Travis is an avid traveler and lover of the outdoors, he spends much of his personal time pursuing outdoor recreation during the warmer months of the year including camping and fly fishing.
You will not see him much throughout the year at the store, coaching and teaching responsibilities minimize his time spent at Strides, but be sure to say hello if you see him, he enjoys friendly conversation discussing shared common interests.
